Next on our Law School Tour....Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska...
Erick was accepted to Creighton University in Omaha and University of Nebrasa-Lincoln. We had to make just a quick trip because I'm running out of vacation time for these little trips. We flew into Omaha late friday night. By the time we found our hotel it was really late so Erick and I made a quick plan for the next day and went to sleep. The next morning it was rainy and gross outside, but we didn't have time to let that stop us. So off we go. First stop...ARCHIVERS!! I had to make sure I knew where the closest scrapbook store was if I was going to live in this place. Luckily it was close and in the cutest outdoor mall.
Next stop..Creighton for our "Self Guided Tour" On our way we kept seeing signs for "Boy's Town" Of course curiosity got the better of us and we had to stop. Founded by Father Flanigan in 1917, it is a home and school for homeless, abandoned and neglected boys. The grounds are so awesome.
Ok...on to Creighton. We never could get anyone to get back to us about giving us a tour, so we figured...How hard could it be to give ourselves a tour? Well we soon found out...pretty hard. once we got there, EVERYTHING was closed up and there was not a soul to be found. So Erick and I walked around and we kinda knew that wasn't the place for us.
Our last order of business....find the Temple. The map made it seem like it was far away from everything...we drove for a little bit and soon we were in this neighborhood that everything was "mormon" something....Winter Quarters Park, Mormon Pioneer Blvd....We finally made it to the Winter Quarters Visitors Center and parked, the Temple was right across the street. The minute we stepped out of the car there was this spirit and peace that came over me, I just wanted to cry. We didn't go into the visitors center, it was full of little YM/YW that must have been having an outting. So we walked across the street to the Mormon Pioneer Cemetary. It was beautiful and quiet. There were a few monuments telling a short story of the pioneers and how they settled there for the Winter. There are over 600 people buried in a cemetary that was probably no bigger than my parents backyard. Very few markers or gravestones. The temple is right next door, so small, but beautiful accents. Stained glass windows and such.
Last stop: I told Erick I wanted one picture of the Missouri river to complete my pioneer tour, so we followed the map to mormon bridge which goes over the Missouri River and before we knew it we were headed for IOWA!!!
Of course our lady in the box (GPS system) couldn't figure out how to recalculate us back to Lincoln so we tried our best to turn around in Council Bluffs....on our way we saw signs for the Lewis and Clark Monument so we thought...What the heck....it seemed to take forever to get to it. Erick said, you know, most people put monuments in places were people can get to them easily....well NOT LEWIS AND CLARK!! They did everything the difficult way. Several times we thought about turning around, but once we got there we were so happy we did. It sits on the top of a hill and over looks the valley and in the distance you can see Omaha..it was beautiful.
After we were done with Lewis and Clark we headed for Lincoln....To be continued....
